Why do many birds migrate?

Many birds migrate primarily to take advantage of abundant food sources. Migration enables birds to travel to regions where food is plentiful, particularly during times when their breeding grounds may become scarce or inhospitable due to seasonal changes. During migration, birds often target areas with high availability of insects, seeds, and other resources needed for survival, especially during the breeding season when they require additional energy to raise their young.

While escaping predators, finding mates, and avoiding harsh weather conditions can also influence migratory behavior and timing, the primary driver is usually the quest for food. As food sources become depleted in one area or inaccessible due to environmental factors, birds will move to areas where they can find sustenance to support themselves and their reproductive needs. This opportunistic behavior allows them to maximize their energy and reproductive success during the breeding season.
